Viking Bags Momentum 40L – The Saddlebags that work on ANY bike

Disclosure: Viking Bags sent me this product free of charge for review. This is my honest, unfiltered take.

I specifically requested the throw-over version of Viking’s Momentum Extra Large Expandable Saddlebags — no quick-release brackets, no permanent hardware, no bike-specific mounting. Just Cordura bags that drape over the pillion seat and cinch down with straps. That was the whole appeal going in.

Build Quality
Out of the box, these hold their own weight standing up on a bench — no floppy canvas here. The stitching is clean, the zippers feel solid, and there’s reflective piping built in for visibility at night. Empty weight comes in around 3.3 lbs for the pair, so you’re not adding much bulk before you’ve packed anything.

This isn’t my first experience with Viking’s build quality, either. Years ago I ran a hard-mount set of their saddlebags on my Honda Shadow — bolted-on, solid frame. I went down in a low-speed slide, and those bags held their shape through it. I genuinely believe they helped prevent worse injury. So I already trusted this brand before these arrived.

Versatility — The Real Test
I mounted the Momentum bags on my Triumph Bonneville T120, then moved them straight over to my Triumph Trident 660 — two bikes with completely different frames, seat shapes, and riding positions. No compatibility issues, because there’s nothing bike-specific to be compatible with. If you own more than one bike, or you’re not ready to commit hardware to one, this is the entire value proposition.

Capacity
Collapsed, they sit slim against the bike. Unzip the expansion gusset and you’re at 2,440 cubic inches combined. A waterproof liner is included, and MOLLE attachment points on the outside let you strap on extra gear if you need it.

On the Road
Loaded and at speed, the straps held tension — no shifting or sway through turns. They sat exactly where I strapped them in.

Verdict
At under $200, you’re getting real Cordura build quality, solid capacity, and total freedom to move these between bikes with zero commitment. If you want a race-fit, bolted-on look, this isn’t that bag. If you want touring capacity without modifying your bike, it’s hard to beat.
